What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
